The World Of Colors
One of the hardest things about home decor can be choosing a color scheme for your home design. We often study color samples for hours, hoping for inspiration for a design that will seem fresh and hold up for at least a year or two.
Colors are symbolic in many ways. They depict a mood, send a message and reflect a personality.
Our modern times saw the return of neutral colors – beige, tan, cream, sand. These colors reflect the present economic worries of many Americans and perhaps, even the rest of the world. Neutral colors are symbolisms of the need for comfort, security and safety.
Complementing the neutral shades are sparks of bright colors like yellow, crimson, green and blue. These vivid colors are signs of optimism for the future. An encouragement that things will turn out fine. It’s common to see furnishings in a neutral shade accented with a bright hue.
So what colors are starting to bid adieu? Brown is a good example. If it has been around for years, 2009 is making way for other more noticeable colors. Area rugs for instance, are now available in brighter colors or if not, in neutral colors like tan, beige and cream.
As the browns start to fade out, designs say that the color gray appears to be on the upswing. As a foundation color, gray spans a range of hues from soft dove gray to dusky charcoal to deep hematite. Gray also holds its own when jazzed up with pearlescent and metallic accents.
Green, the color of eco-friendly design, also is growing in popularity in nearly every shade. Some designers predict it will be found in everything from curtains, area rugs and upholstery to kitchen and bathroom countertops.
European home decor has centered on black-and-white designs recently, and this trend has begun to make its way to America. Coupled with this combination of opposites are accents of acid green, red and pink. These last two colors are hues that Americans associate with causes, such as red for HIV/AIDS and pink for breast cancer, so their use in home design also gives a new resonance of social responsibility that matches the national mood.
Violet is a top choice nowadays for accessories. Black is no longer the exclusive color for the Goth style as violet is fast becoming a sought after choice. Not surprising therefore to see teenagers with violet or purple eyeliners, nail polish and even lipstick!
Yellow may be an in color as an accent but as a primary color, it is now being replaced by the more eye-catching gold. I guess it’s a good reminder of how much money economies have lost and need to gain back.
The best thing about this color trend is the strong hold of neutral shades that are said to be the perfect backdrop for every color out there. So whether you choose violet, crimson, gold or gray, with a neutral tone to match, you will never have to worry about a mismatched, awful look.
